Firmware Validation Engineer - Ethernet Peripherals

Validate firmware drivers for Ethernet peripherals, including Ethernet Switches, Ethernet PHYs, and EtherCAT controllers, and perform comprehensive testing and validation procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Validate firmware drivers for Ethernet peripherals.
  • Design, develop, and execute comprehensive test plans, test cases, and validation procedures for embedded firmware drivers.
  • Perform functional, integration, regression, and system-level validation of Ethernet communication interfaces.
  • Verify driver functionality across different hardware platforms and embedded operating systems.
  • Debug firmware and hardware-related issues using tools such as logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers, and JTAG debuggers.
  • Analyze Ethernet packet flow, communication timing, and protocol compliance using packet analysis tools (e.g., Wireshark).
  • Validate Ethernet PHY initialization, link establishment, auto-negotiation, speed/duplex configuration, and power management features.
  • Validate managed/unmanaged Ethernet switch functionalities, including VLANs, QoS, multicast, port mirroring, and switching behavior.
  • Perform EtherCAT protocol validation, including master-slave communication, synchronization, cyclic data exchange, and error handling.
  • Work closely with firmware, hardware, BSP, and system engineering teams to identify, reproduce, and resolve defects.
  • Develop automation scripts using Python, Shell, or similar scripting languages to improve validation efficiency.
  • Document test results, defect reports, validation summaries, and compliance reports.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of Embedded C/C++ and firmware validation methodologies.
  • Experience validating drivers for Ethernet Switches, Ethernet PHYs, and EtherCAT devices.
  • Good understanding of Ethernet protocols (IEEE 802.3), TCP/IP, UDP, VLAN, QoS, and industrial Ethernet concepts.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, RTOS, or bare-metal environments.
  • Hands-on experience with debugging tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
  • Familiarity with packet capture and analysis tools like Wireshark.
  • Knowledge of communication interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, MDIO, PCIe, and memory-mapped peripherals.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git.
  • Exposure to test automation frameworks and scripting languages is preferred.
